HUMDRUM is a stereo Drum’n’Drone machine, a complex stand alone synth with a small footprint, build in an open frame way on a single PCB, with all components and solder points accessible*. In total HUMDRUM contains 8 reverse avalanche oscillators, of which 4 are TONE OSC and the other 4 are BEAT OSC. 2 resonant low pass filters and 2 signal boosters, based on the EHX LBP. All this is divided into 2 channels (stereo), that you can either route through different effect chains or use to have a wide dynamic stereo field filled with frequencies and rhythms. Each OSC has an individual FREQUENCY and LEVEL control. For the TONE OSC the FREQUENCY controls the pitch and for the BEAT OSC, that work like LFOs, FREQUENCY controls the rate, from tremolo like flutters to slower beats. The LEVELs of each channel are very interactive and the balance between them determines for example the decay of the TONE, which of the TONE OSC is dominant or how much the BEATs are attenuating each other. Since the BEAT OSC are not synced, their free range allows you do generate poly-rhythms. Each resonant low pass filter has a FILTER CUTOFF and a RESONANCE control, the latter is self-oscillating in higher settings. The VOLUME control is useful to attenuate the otherwise very ‘hot’ signal, i found half way up is good for regular guitar pedals, but cranked open more will get your signal clipping which can also have sonically interesting results. And if this is not enough, the HUMDRUM has simple MOD inputs for each oscillator, where you can insert any component that can change it’s resistance , the easiest would be to use LDRs (Light Dependent Resistors), as shown in the end of the demo video, but it could also be ribbon/soft pots, pressure sensors or even hand-drawn ‘keyboards’. (* That means you got to be careful not to short circuit the device, the plastique ‘legs’ on the underside have the purpose to keep the solder points from conductive surfaces, as the IC is sensitive to static electricity.)
